The oldest temple in Japan

Japanese buddhism came from the Korean Peninsula in the 6th century. In 588 AD, Soga-no-Umako started construction of the oldest temple in Japan. That is Asuka-dera in the present Asuka village. The temple was a building that was not in Japan until then, such as roofing tiles on the roof and standing pillars on the foundation stone. Soga-no-Umako invited a lot of engineers from the Korean peninsula for the construction of Asuka-dera.

Roof tiles of Asuka-dera

Photo 1 and 2 are roof tiles used for the eaves of Asuka-dera. These roof tiles have simple lotus flower patterns that only show the contours of petals. This pattern is very similar to that of the Baekje area temple on the Korean Peninsula. This type of tile was used until the first half of the 7th century.
